The Deffufa

The Deffufa is a unique structure in Kushite architecture, it was a large mud brick temple used by the elite of Kush. There are three Deffufa located in Nubia. The western Deffufa is a solid rectangular mass of mud brick more than 150 feet long and 75 feet wide.

The walls of the Deffufa were decorated with tiles and gold leaf.The lower western Deffufa was used as a warehouse. The eastern Deffufa is slightly shorter than the western Deffufa was used as a funeral chapel. The third Deffufa is the smallest. The three Deffufa temples are unparalleled anywhere else in the ancient world.
